Rocky Smolin Wins the AUGSD 2012 Access Idol Challenge

On December 18, 2012 we held the finals for our Access Idol Challenge, in which the 3 winners from the September through November meetings competed for the honor of being our San Diego Access Idol.

Our winner was Rocky Smolin, of Beach Access Software, for his integrated manufacturing application E-Z MRP. The fact that Rocky’s application is enjoyed by hundreds of companies around the world (in multiple languages!), combined with his entertaining, self-effacing presentation style, gave Rocky the edge over very stiff competition from runners-up Joe Anderson and Gary Erdell.

Rocky’s E-Z MRP best met the judging criteria for an application that:

  • Satisfies business requirements
  • Intuitive to use, easy for a beginner as an expert
  • Sports a well-organized user interface and a natural workflow
  • Easy to deploy
  • Follows a data-driven design with well-structured and highly reusable code
  • Has a widespread user base

We want to give our heartfelt thanks to all the contestants who worked so hard to produce such impressive Access-based software applications:

  • Chuck Hartje -- Report Navigation Module
  • Dick Abodeely – Tactical Range Training system
  • Gary Erdell – Returned Material database (finalist)
  • Matt Shoemaker – Public Relations database with Excel and Tableau interfaces
  • Barry Hynum – Automated Proposal Builder
  • Leo the DBGuy – Fillable pdf form
  • Joe Anderson – Database Maintenance Manager (finalist)

We wish to thank our dedicated group of judges, who showed up every month and took their jobs very seriously:

  • Wendy Eichenbaum of UCentric Design
  • Seth Graven of Eastridge Technologies
  • Jon Singer of TEK Systems
  • Helen Montgomery of UCSD Extension
  • Elaine S. Gonzalez of New Horizons Learning Center

A special thanks to our gracious sponsor,

TEK Systems, for keeping us fed and happy for every meeting!
